The Montepulciano grape is one of the most widespread indigenous varieties in Italy, cultivated mainly on the side of the Peninsula bathed by the Adriatic Sea. With this impressive Fattore, from the Col del Mondo line, the Tenuta del Priore winery offers us its most symbolic and important wine, which best represents the region, the traditions of Abruzzo, and the immense passion they put into winemaking.
Upon its founding, Tenuta del Priore began its production precisely with Abruzzo's most classic grape variety, Montepulciano, seeking constant quality improvement, using new and different viticultural and oenological technologies at every stage of the production process, always respecting the essence of the grape variety and the unique character of the wine.
Produced only in the best years, it is a wine with great aging potential.
Tasting notes: in color it is garnet red. On the nose it is complex, with notes of red fruits and flowers, spices and Mediterranean vegetation. The palate is full-bodied, supported by a fresh minerality and silky tannins.
Food pairing: an ideal wine to accompany main courses such as ossobuco, oxtail, lamb stew and aged cheeses.
Provenance: Collecorvino, Pescara, in the Abruzzo region
Year: 2020
Grape varieties: 100% Montepulciano
Orientation and altitude: southwest, 250m above average sea level.
Soil type: in the first vineyard it is Sasso Bianco Morenico, supported by silt and clay. In another property, it is characterized by a more clayey and sometimes calcareous marl.
Vinification: the bunches are selected and harvested manually in the first half of October. The grapes are destemmed and pressed, then fermented at a controlled temperature (between 26ºC and 28°C), while maceration lasts 3 to 4 weeks, depending on the harvest, with frequent pumping over and délestage. The wine is then transferred to barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place, after which bâtonnage (the stirring of the must with the aid of a stick, in French, bâton, the origin of the name of this technique) is carried out repeatedly. From spring onwards, the wine rests quietly for 12 months in 225-liter French oak barrels. Bottling takes place in the spring of the second year after harvesting.
Alcohol content: 14.5%
Serving temperature: should be served between 16ºC and 18ºC
Tenuta del Priore
Tenuta del Priore is a family winery in the Abruzzo region that produces classic Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Passerina wines from 53 hectares of vineyards near the village of Collecorvino, in the province of Pescara. Three-quarters of the property is dedicated to Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. The vineyards are located in a high area overlooking the Adriatic Sea, on clayey calcareous, morainic, and silty soils, rich in stones (calcareous), between the Pescara Hills, near Pescara and the Adriatic Sea.
Its main Montepulciano vineyard, 4.5 hectares, called Filiani in honor of the previous owner, is only 3 km from the beach, at an altitude of approximately 270 meters above sea level, on a chain of silty and calcareous hills near the village of Città Sant’Angelo, within the Colline Teramo DOCG zone. Fabrizio Mazzocchetti is the newest family member to take responsibility for the property, along with his father, Antonio.
Fabrizio's first harvest was in 2001, and since then, he has worked hard to refine viticulture and winemaking. Since 2017, Fabrizio has dedicated himself to bringing more clarity, rigor, and definition to his Montepulciano Col del Mondo. With the Campotino range, they offer quality wines at affordable prices, from young vines, cultivated in a Guyot system, in cooler locations and with lighter soils. The whites (Trebbiano, Pecorino, Passerina) and the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo rosé are expertly crafted to provide a clear fruity expression and a strong sense of place, without the use of wood.
The Col del Mondo line, created by Fabrizio at the beginning of this century, is divided between the Sunnae, Fattore, and Kerrias labels and comes from older vines, 21 years old, cultivated in a Guyot system, planted in more favorable white calcareous clay and morainic soils, overlooking the Adriatic.
