Le Stoppie is the basal part of cereals that remains rooted in cultivated land after harvesting, also known as stubble. A little over two decades ago, the land where the vineyards of the Tuscan producer San Felo are now planted was dedicated to wheat cultivation.

Tasting notes:

«The colour is brilliant straw yellow with golden reflections. On the nose, rich aromas initially of yellow apple, lemon blossom and jasmine, followed by yoghurt and peach. The delicately led palate is balanced and smooth, with fine acidity, body and an intense fruity core.» (Falstaff, Othmar Kiem & Simon Staffler, 23.06.2023).

Food pairing: an ideal wine to accompany fish dishes and delicate seafood, such as scallops or oysters, but also grilled vegetables and young cheeses.

Origin: Pagliarelli di Sotto, in the municipality of Magliano in Toscana, province of Grosseto, Tuscany.

Year: 2024

Grape varieties: 100% Vermentino.

Exposure and altitude: mainly southeast, 150m to 180m above average sea level.

Soil type: sandy-loam soil, quite homogeneous.

Winemaking: the grapes are harvested manually, after reaching perfect phenolic ripeness, between late August and mid-September. Traditional white wine vinification takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks (not exceeding 18°C). The wine then ages on its lees for about a month, in the same tanks. After this, it is chilled to 0°C and filtered. The wine is bottled in February of the year following the harvest.

Alcohol content: 13%

Serving temperature: should be served between 10ºC and 12ºC

Awards and distinctions:

Falstaff (2022 vintage): 90 points

About San Felo

The passion for grape cultivation and rural traditions, combined with the desire to actively contribute to the promotion of the Maremma Toscana region, led the Vanni family, a certified Maremmana family, to realise a dream at the beginning of this century: the San Felo winery, with approximately 74 hectares of land, including 54 hectares of vineyard.
Wisdom, experience, and patience, along with investment in new techniques, are the factors that have allowed San Felo to produce wines that value the winemaking heritage of Maremma Toscana passed down from generation to generation.

Staying true to tradition, the winery cultivates Sangiovese and Vermentino to produce Morellino di Scansano DOCG and Maremma Toscana DOC, respectively. It also cultivates international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Viognier, to which it gives maximum expression. It focuses on producing a limited quantity of high-quality wine.
