July 23rd, Dante & C.ª 1st Anniversary: Una Minestra Musicale — Musical cycle with Ana Maria Santos and Rui Borges Maia

On July 23rd, Dante & C.ª celebrates its first anniversary in the Alvalade neighborhood:
— 6:30 PM: Happy Hour, with music, welcome drink, new cocktails*, craft beers and various wines, Prosecco, Limoncello or Marsala, pinsa and focaccia.
*In addition to the usual Aperol, Campari, and Limoncello Spritz, we are adding Negroni, Americano, Negroni Sbagliato, and Gin & Tonic.
— 8:00 PM: premiere of the "Una Minestra Musicale" series, conceived and performed by clarinetist Ana Maria Santos and flautist Rui Borges Maia.
This musical series will highlight and explore the evolution of Western classical music in dialogue with Italy's rich melodic traditions. Across a series of concerts, it will cover the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, early 20th-century, and contemporary music periods. In addition to historical context, we will experience live music from each major period, with guided listening to enhance understanding of the innovations and sounds of each era.
The Baroque period influenced dozens of composers throughout music history, which is why it was chosen as the starting point for this series. It introduced innovations in style and artistic vision. Specifically in music, it marked one of its first great revolutions, with the introduction and development of harmony and counterpoint. The German J.S. Bach (1685-1750) was undoubtedly the great musical exponent of this era, contributing to a remodeling of how music was written and performed. Endowed with exceptional musical characteristics, he accepted eccentric challenges from the courts and broke technical barriers that will be revealed during the session. In parallel — and as Baroque art originated in Italy — we will also hear A. Vivaldi (1678-1741), a composer widely known for his "Four Seasons," through the virtuosity of the solo instrument — he was one of those responsible for the emergence of this position within the orchestra.

Ana Maria Santos holds a PhD with Distinction and Praise from the University of Évora. During her training, she worked with Etienne Lamaison, Harry Sparnaay at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, and Michel Arrignon at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, holding scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Carolina Foundation. In 2012, at this school, she received the award for best student in the clarinet class from Queen Sofía of Spain. She is currently a Guest Assistant Professor at the University of Évora, part of the faculty at the Lucerne Festival Academy, and collaborates with the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Pedro Carneiro. She works on several social projects that are part of the OCP's artistic universe, namely Notas de Contacto — an inclusive ensemble with people with intellectual disabilities — and Novos Horizontes — an orchestra composed of children from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2021 and 2022, in Switzerland, she collaborated on musical theater projects led by violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and also performed at the New York Contemporary Music Biennial in 2015. Since 2016, she has been an artist for the Buffet Crampon clarinet brand.
Rui Borges Maia studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, with scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Carolina Foundation, receiving the award for best student in 2009 and 2010 from Queen Sofía of Spain. He is a member of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, notably collaborating on the social project Notas de Contacto: OCPsolidária at CERCIOEIRAS. He is part of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, Andris Nelsons, Riccardo Chailly, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In his career, he has been a member of, among others, the Saito Kinen Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Mozart, Ensemble MidtVest, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra, under the direction of Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, and Peter Eötvos. Since 2008, he has been developing theoretical and practical research with Jacques Zoon for the development of the transverse flute, and the instrument he uses in his concerts is a result of this work. He is part of a research project at the Haute École de Musique de Genève, aiming to create a prototype for a new wooden transverse flute. Thanks to this experience, he creates and adapts new instruments for people with disabilities who are part of the Notas de Contacto Ensemble. He is a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa and the Escola Profissional Metropolitana.
